Acoustic Insulation vs Acoustic Absorption
Acoustic Insulation
Acoustic insulation means sound is prevented from travelling from room to room. This is an important feature for many workplaces as noise travel can disrupt concentration and work efficiency. It is also important to maintain confidentiality in meeting rooms and offices when appropriate.
Acoustic insulation is most effectively achieved when building materials possess acoustic qualities such as acoustic plasterboard or acoustic underlay. This ensures the structure of the build is acoustically effective even before furnishings are added.
Acoustic Absorption
Acoustic absorption deals with the reverberation of sound within a space. Sound will dissipate as it travels but reflects in a similar way to light. For example, someone’s voice may reverberate off a floor, ceiling or wall, causing it to echo. Softer materials will absorb some of this energy, which will help prevent an echoey environment.
Acoustic absorption is most commonly linked to retrofit solutions such as wall tiles and furniture - essentially elements which can be added in at the end of a project. When used in combination with acoustically insulating products, your workplace will benefit from two aspects of sound optimisation!
