What is Fire Resistant Plasterboard?
There are various types of fire plasterboard you can use in your property. These products go through a special manufacturing process to ensure it has fire-resistant properties.
Fire-resistant plasterboard is made using a gypsum core and reinforced using glass fibres (this makes them more fire retardant). Sometimes referred to as pink plasterboard, 30-minute fire-rated plasterboard is generally the minimum requirement to be classed as a fireboard plasterboard.
Why Choose Fire Resistant Boards?
The primary reason you’ll use plaster board that is fire rated is to help protect your building and its contents should the unfortunate event of a fire break out.
The gypsum in the fire-retardant plasterboard contains small amounts of water. When a fire breaks out, the water is driven out, helping to keep the temperature of the fire down. This property can help to protect the structure of your building and improve the chances of survival until the fire services arrive.
Please note: It’s vital to look at the plasterboard fire resistance rating to ensure you select a suitable one for your building.
Where Should I Use Fire Resistant Plasterboard?
There are several areas of a building where it makes sense to use a high-quality fire and heat-resistant plasterboard. You’ll want to use this type of plasterboard in the area of your junction box should an electrical fire start. Another excellent area to install fire-rated plasterboard is in kitchens, and you will also want to consider installing this plasterboard in ceilings and floors.

Plasterboard Fire Rating Chart
Before purchasing your fire rated plasterboard, you’ll need to understand what fire ratings mean and how much protection a product will provide. The most universal way of comparing fire performance is to reference the two most common rating systems: The British Standard (BS 476) and The European Standard (EN 13501).
This chart below shows the various plasterboard fire ratings:
| The British Standard (BS 476) | The European Standard (EN 13501) |
|---|---|
| N/A | A |
| 0 | B |
| 1 & 2 | C |
| 3 | D |
| 4 | E |
| Unclassifiable | F |
What is a Plasterboard Fire Rating?
Using the plasterboard fire rating chart, you can see how well the plasterboard you’re considering using is rated. The numerical UK rating system ranges from 0 to 4 and a European one uses a letter-based rating system, going from A to F. You can get plasterboard with 60 min fire rating and 30-minute fire-rated plasterboard.
The UK or European plasterboard fire ratings are acceptable for buildings in the UK – you can use either for your building project.
How Do I Install Fire Resistant Plasterboard?
Installing a fire board is relatively simple. You can use adhesive to fix the fire-retardant plasterboard in place (you can also use screws). Please do not use a hammer when installing Fireline plasterboard or other brands as this can damage the product and reduce its effectiveness in the event of a fire.
The fire board plasterboard must be hung with the grain running horizontally. Please ensure you attach them firmly to the wooden studs and that the fireproof plasterboard panels are flush when fixing them to the studs, with no gaps.
