Intumescents expand when exposed to fire. Products such as Intumescent Pillows protect electrical trunking, cable trays and pipe work by expanding on contact with fire, offering up to 120 minutes of fire protection.
Pipe Wrap is designed to maintain the fire resistance of walls and floors when these are breached by pipework. It is flexible and can protect both plastic pipework and electrical trunking in fire rated surfaces. This is a very cheap method of ensuring that small gaps created in the installation of piping systems do not lead to a potential fire hazard.
Alternatively, Pipe fire collars can be used around the pipe at the point it intersects the wall, floor or ceiling. These act in a similar way to the wrap, expanding when exposed to fire and sealing any potential gaps.
For the lengths of pipes, insulated fire sleeves can be fitted to protect the surrounding cavity. When exposed to fire, the insulated fire sleeves expand and seal the gaps between surrounding pipework and construction. These fire sleeves are also an effective vapour barrier providing thermal protection to the pipe itself. This helps to prevent condensation forming on cold pipework, as well as heat loss from hot pipes.
