What’s the difference between a stud wall and a partition wall?

A stud wall is a type of partition wall, but not all partition walls are stud walls. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Stud Wall – This is a framed structure, typically made from timber or metal studs, spaced regularly apart and covered with boards like plasterboard. The spaces between the studs can be filled with insulation for added soundproofing or thermal properties. Stud walls are lightweight, non-load bearing and can be easily constructed or relocated within a property.
  • Partition Wall – A broader term, a partition wall is any wall that divides spaces within a building. It can be made from various materials, including brick, block or studwork. While stud walls are a type of partition wall, not all partition walls have the framed and infilled structure of stud walls.

In essence, while all stud walls are partition walls, not all partition walls are made using the stud method. If you’re considering installing a wall in your space, it’s important to choose the right type based on your specific needs and the nature of your project.
