Whilst cavity fire barriers and fire stops are both designed to offer fire protection by preventing the spread of flames and smoke, it’s important to establish the difference between the two solutions to decide the best solution for your space.
Cavity Barriers
Fire rated cavity barriers are installed within larger voids like ceiling and wall cavities, providing fire resistance and in some cases, acoustic insulation within a building. A significant difference between cavity barriers and firestops is the cavities these barriers fill tend to be internal and concealed within part of the building.
Firestops
In comparison, firestops are designed to prevent fire passing through smaller openings and joints, such as around trunking that penetrates through a wall. They work by sealing these gaps and preventing fire from spreading through. Firestops tend to be more visible inside the building.
