Doors. We don’t often put much thought into them, but they’re imperative to the functionality of our day-to-day lives. From security to accessibility, their ironmongery is arguably just as important.
Front door lock types, internal door latch types – there are many more types of different door locks than you initially realise, and these different door lock types will provide different functions for a room.
What are the Different Types of Door Locks?
Whether you’re replacing your door ironmongery or building a new one, there are plenty of options to choose from. This article will guide you through the different types of locks for doors to help you decide on the best product for your property.
1. Cylinder Lock
A cylinder lock is one of the most common internal door lock types. Many of us will have this installed in our homes and workplaces. The lock comprises a keyhole and locking mechanism and uses pins of various sizes. These must be aligned correctly in order for the lock to open.
These door locking mechanisms are available in two types: euro and oval. It’s also possible to get single or double cylinder locks. With a single cylinder lock, it’s easy to open with a key from one side, whereas double cylinder locks are opened with a key on both sides of the door.
2. Door Latch
One of the simplest bathroom door lock types is a door latch. This is easy to use and install on internal doors in a variety of properties. A typical door latch is a mechanism that connects the door to the frame, however, it can also attach to a catch on the outside of the door frame. Of all the door latch types available for the internal doors in your workplace, this is the least secure. With that said, it’s ideal for bathrooms and other low-risk areas that require little security.
3. Deadlocks
Another option for types of door lock that you can use on your property is the simple deadlock. This is also sometimes used as a deadbolt. A deadlock extends from the door and uses a simple bar of metal that pushes into the door frame, preventing it from opening. Deadlocks are pretty uncomplicated to use. Installation is also fairly straightforward and so are used on many doors in properties throughout the UK.
4. Bathroom Locks
With the exception of external doors, the most common doors to have a lock are the ones belonging to a bathroom. Bathroom locks are designed to provide privacy rather than security. This is why they’re not always the strongest locks that you can get for your property.
One of the most common bathroom door lock types is a device you slide to lock the doors. These can be easily opened from the outside as they have a small hole that a toothpick or similar sized item can be used to push the lock in, opening the door. This is also helpful in cases of emergency in the home or workplace.
5. Multi-Point Locks
If you’re looking for a lock that’s strong and secure, multi-point locks are an excellent option to consider. Doors with a multi-point locking system use only one key to open them. This key releases the bolts from the door that were previously locked into the door frame, allowing it to open. They are common home front door lock types, most often found on uPVC and composite doors.
6. Mortice Locks
Another secure option to consider using is a mortice lock. These can use between two and even levers, depending on how secure you want your property. They are common front door lock types which require a pocket to be cut out of the door and a strike plate to be fitted to the door frame to install this locking system.
Less of the locking system is noticeable, meaning this option is considered to be aesthetically pleasing. They’re an excellent type of door lock to help increase the security of your property.
6. Euro Profile
A euro profile door lock is a commonly used type of cylinder lock. You find these types of door locks UK-wide. A piece of metal connects the two sides of the lock and only one side is able to be used at a time. A euro profile type of lock requires a larger keyhole, but they’re affordable and simple to install.
7. Rim Locks
Another option that’s simple to install and efficient is the rim lock. These types of locks are not set on the edge of the door as you might expect. Instead, they attach to the door’s surface.
A rim lock is one of the oldest types of door locking mechanisms used in the UK. Part of the reason they’re still popular is the ease at which they can be installed.
8. Sash Locks
You can also consider installing a sash lock on your door as another common door lock type to help keep your property secure. A sash lock is one of the popular deadbolt lock types with a built-in latch that’s spring operated. It’s a non-locking system which means the door can be unlocked but still held in place through the springing mechanism. These doors can also be locked and opened with a key if you’re looking to provide more security to your space.
9. Night Latches
Night latches can be installed on your doors to lock them and keep your space secure. You can mount a light latch on the surface of the door’s inner side. The rim cylinder is then fitted to the outer side, allowing you to open it. The bolt from the mechanism fits into a slot in the door frame which holds it secure. It’s one of the common door latch types you see on UK properties.
